2015 – IAABO Board 31 Banquet

The annual Board 31 banquet was held Friday, April 3rd, 6pm, at the Yankee Pedlar Inn, in Holyoke. Board members hosted our scholarship winners, their parents, coaches and athletic director, our sportsmanship winner head coach and captains, and numerous past presidents.

The evening began with a social hour featuring a free beverage token and a cheese, crackers, and fruit platter. Members congratulated scholarship awardees Mary Nahorniak (Chicopee High) and Sean Buxton (Chicopee Comprehensive). Coaches Steve Marcil and Mike Labrie (respectively) also attended in support of their players. Sportsmanship winner, Longmeadow High, was represented by head coach Patrick Murphy and his two captains Chris King and Tighe Dudeck.

Banquet Chair, Mike Shirley, created a new offering at the banquet that created quite an interest. Mike solicited and received 29 raffle prizes. Members Dan Hall, Chris Brown, Dan Woodill, Brian Alves, Owen Shanahan, and Tim Provost helped to acquire prizes, and coach Joe Molta (Molt’s Liquors, Westfield) provided a wine and cheese basket for the raffle.

Their efforts resulted in a fun time and $665 in raffle earnings for the scholarship fund. Thanks Mike and assistants!

Following a welcome to all by president, Joe Lavoie, and an excellent buffet dinner, the program consisted of Chair Chris Brown presenting the Sportsmanship Award to Longmeadow Coach Patrick Murphy, with a short acceptance speech, followed by Chair John Gagnon presenting the scholarship awards to Mary Nahorniak with words of praise and support from Coach Steve Marcil, an acceptance speech by Mary, followed by the award presented to Sean Buxton with words of praise and support by Chicopee Athletic Director, Jim Blain, and an acceptance speech by Sean.

MC and in-coming president, Brian Page, then presented out-going secretary-treasurer Jeff Rivet with a token of appreciation from the board, followed by a similar award to out-going president, Joe Lavoie.

Hickson Award Chair, Chris Brown, then announced the Hickson Award winner: Jim Whipple. Jim accepted the award with words of thanks and appreciation to Chris and the committee. Bob Galiatsos, D’Agostino Award Chair, then announced the D’Ag winner, Mike Shirley. Mike accepted with words of thanks and appreciation to Bob and the committee.

Past president Mike Deary then introduced past board president (1983) Saul Finestone, and presented Saul with the 2015 IAABO Board 31 Life Member Award. Saul regaled the attendees with anecdotes and observations over his many years in officiating. Everyone enjoyed Saul’s comments and perspectives and many thanked and congratulated Saul at the close of the banquet.
